I decided to start a play log to have a more organized place to collect my thoughts about video games! I figure it might as well be in a public place I could share with others and refer to professionally so here I am, typing about what I’m playing this week!
Chants of Sennaar
This is a really neat little game about deciphering languages! It uses a very similar “lock in” mechanic that I first saw in “Return of the Obra Dinn”. There’s some half backed stealth gameplay in here that’s clearly intended to break up the pure puzzle solving, but this is otherwise an adventure game (even features a point and click interface). I think overall this is a really great entry into the “modern puzzle adventurer” category that continues to mature.
Deaths Door
This was a neat little “old school zelda like” from what looks like 2 guys at Acid Nerve. Cool music, very neat animation! Fun textures, light and shadow. I think this
is an amazing example of what a really minimal talented team can accomplish.
The game has a fun sort of generally “tilted” humor that I found enjoyable that’s contrasted by some surprisingly somber boss eulogies delivered by a gravedigger with a tombstone for a heard.
There’s some really odd gameplay decisions around combat controls (attack on west face and right trigger by default what?) that leave buttons dead and a lot of unexplored opportunities. general combat gameplay is the same across weapons and enemy types.
There’s a very neat secret ending to this game that I opted not to do. It looks very cool and discovering the existence of “more” was fun however as I figured for a smaller team the extra stuff is basically a collectathon. Big ups for putting this in there. While it’s not the amazing “omg it was here the whole time” revelation these things can be, simply seeing that there was more post ending was neat.
Supervive
Battlerite Battle Royale lives one … Sorta. This thing feels sweaty as all balls but I’ve had a blast a few times in here. It really makes me miss Battlerite arena. I don’t need all the map movement, long term strategy and downtime, my favorite thing about these has been team fighting and in a lot of ways the excessive amount of third partying tends to ruin the “purity” of that stuff for me. I have a feeling I’ll be checking back on this for a few months at least though.
Lies of P
I’m coming back to this one again after playing about half of it on game pass before I decided to stop supporting that cause like… If I’m not going to buy games who the fuck is, really?
Combat doesn’t feel like it man… I have lots of feelings about this in contrast to other parry focused games like Sekiro. I’m enjoying this, but also I’m not… I’ll probably have more to say about this in the next few months as I just started.
On the couch I’m playing; Windblown and Rogue Prince of Persia
